Cascading Style Sheets

CSS is a standard for specifying the appearance of text and other elements. It is used to describe how an HTML document should be formatted. This new feature being added to HTML, gives both Web site developers and users more control over how pages are displayed. Designers and users can create style sheets that define how different elements, such as headers and links, appear.

Cascading Style Sheets, level 2 (CSS2) is a style sheet language that allows authors and users to attach style (e.g., fonts, spacing, and aural cues) to structured documents (e.g., HTML documents and XML applications). It provides the ability to separate the layout and styles of a web page from the data or information. Styles such as fonts, font sizes, margins, can be specified in one place, then the Web pages feed off this one master list, with the styles cascading throughout the page or an entire site. By separating the presentation style of documents from the content of documents, CSS2 simplifies Web authoring and site maintenance.

CSS was developed for use with HTML in Web pages but is also used in other situations, notably in applications built using XPFE. CSS is typically used to provide a single "library" of styles that are used over and over throughout a large number of related documents, as in a web site. Cascading Style Sheets are a big breakthrough in Web design because they allow developers to control the style and layout of multiple Web pages all at once. With CSS, when you want to make a change, you simply change the style, and that element is updated automatically wherever it appears within the site.
